T WdIÇoitU A rally of Tucson High
School (fRS) students and
Pueblo High School (PHS) stu-dents
was planned by the Mex-
Icen-American Liberation Com-mittee
(MALC) in order to pro-test
issues at THS. The high
school members of MALO had
tried to arrange a meeting
with Mr. Hunt, principal of
TRS, after they had presented
a ljt of demands to him. He
refused twice to meet with them
at 3t. Margaret's Church to
discuss these issues so MALO
lammed a ì'all at Oury Park
be held February lL. In
order to attend, high school
students had to walk out of
their classes at 9:30 a.n.
Up until the last moment be-fore
the walk-out four mem-bers
of MALO, Jose Vasquez,
Henry Freeman, Eddie Olivas,
and Graciela Fimbres along
with Father Albert Carrillo,
the spiritual advisor to MALO,
were in Mr. Hunt's office try-ing
to get him to agree to a
meeting to discì.ss thedemands.
The MALO members told Mr. Hunt
that If he would agree to a
meeting they would tell the
high school students not to
walk out for the rally. Fin-ally
at 9:15 a.m. Mr. Hunt
agreed to meet with the stu-dents
and their parents at
St. Margaret's Church at what-ever
date tney would decide,so
the MALO members kept their
promise and stood in the hall-ways
telling students to go
back to class.
The word did not reach FRS
in time so about 200 students
walked out In support of their
carnales at THS and they drove
to Oury Park. Also about 30
THS students who hadnTt heard
the rally was called off went
to Oury. The 250-300 students
who did attend the rally were
very orderly--there was no in-cident
of violence--every stu-dent
knew they were there In
order to peacefully assemble
and protest conditions at fRS--

Everyone had been informed of
the rules which had been drawn
up for the rally.
Speeches discussing the be-havior
rules and demands made
at THS were given by balomri
Baldenegro, co-chairman of MALO
and senior t the U of A, and
David Valadez, MALO member and
senior at THS. KVOA and KOLD
TV caneras were on the scene
and presented good coverage on
tL1e evening news. The next day
the Arizona Daily Star and the
Thcson Daily Citizen printed
articles covering the rally.
Mr. Hunt did not keep his
promise!! fRan he waß &sked
a few days after the rally to
meet at St. Margaret's Church
with MALO members and parents
he said he was too buey to meet
with them. He failed to mention
that he was attending a meeting
that sane night, February 2L,
to discuss the demands with
Mexican_American parents. This
meeting was arranged by Adal-berto
Aguilar, THS shop teach-er,
who alleged'y opposes MALO.
He invited Salomon Baldenegro
and Herminio Hics (co-chairmen
of MALO) at the last minute,
one hour before the meeting--
so they didn't have time to
invite the other MALO members
and parents who are pressuring
for changes at THS. Mr. Aguilar
invited parents who are personal
friends of his, who had already
been indoctrinated against ¡jALO,
against walk-outs, against de-oNe
IC
mands. when Salomon and Remi-rilo
and a few high school MALO
rnbors they wer e able to aun-tact
walked Into the meeting
place--they were shocked to
see that the room chosen was a
bar at the Codo-Estrada LegIcn
Post. Men were drinking while
Mr. Aguilar acted as bartender
and others were playing pool.
Shock was added to shook when
they saw Mr. Hunt at this meet-ing.
It didn't take long to figure
oui- this was a rigged meeting
designed to humIliate MALO mem-bers
and publicly tear them to
shreds. Our chairmen were ask-ed
to tell what MALO is, what
it is for, etc. Them Mr. Runt
was asked to state hie answer
to the demands which was a ser-ies
of no's, while mr. Aguil-ar
and his friends cheered and
applauded for Mr. Hunt (they
actually clapped their hands
and yelled,'You tell 'em Mr.
Hunt," arid"Thatta boy Mr. ffJft%
like subservient little doggles)
Not only did Mr. Hunt show his
incompetency as an educator by
agreeing to meet in a bar--a
very improper atmosphere for
high school youngsters--but he
showed his Inhumanity by al-lowing
high school students to
be publicly humiliated and frus-trated!
Neither Mr. Hunt nor his sub-servient
lambiones could refute
MALC1s position on tOe issues
and the facts and statistics
V presented--instead they
smirked and laughed in order
to avoid the issues.
