dijo.
Los resultados siguen:
-1995: 6 homicidios, 1996: 3 homicidios
-1995: 72 violaciones, 1996: 8 violaciones - -1995: 59 robos, 1996: 50 robos
- -1995: 664 latrocinios, 1996: 646 latrocinios
-1995: 109 asaltos agravantes, 1996: 144 asaltos agravantes
Brewer dij o.

The results of the election are in, and while it
is no surprise that all four candidates will
advance, it does mean that the candidates may
have to work hard to get the votes in the May 20
general election.
The turnout for this election was approxi-mately
5 percent, according to the unofficial can-vas.
City Manager Rene Gastelum said 84 ballots
were cast in iliesday's election, broken down into
nine of the 199 registered Republicans and 75 A
the i 475 registered Democrats.
Councilman Paul S. Diaz, 50, who has been on
the council since 1993, received 52 votes.
Councilman Pete Tadeo, 37, who has served
on the council since 1987, received 48 votes.
Mayor Shirley Villegas, 49, who has been on
the council since 1978 and mayor since 1991,
received +1 votes.
The council members serve four-year terms.
In May, voters will elect three ciW council mern-bers.
The remaining four members have two
years of their terms left to serve.
In the 1995 primary election, 6.6 percent of
the population voted. That breaks down to 102 Of
the 1,552 registered Democrats. Because there
were no Republicans or Independents in the race,
Democrats were the only eligible voters.

Republican Edward "Eddie" Fass Badila. Although
he only needed one vote to get him into the gener-al
election, his presence on the ballot may make
the general election more interesting, since he is
running against three Democratic incumbents.
Being a Republican in an overwhelmingly
Democratic area does not seem to faze Badilla.
"The way I see it, who the person is(rather
than party affiliation) is more important ," he said.
As the only candidate not currently serving on
council, Badilla, 33, knows he needs to mobilize
the community in order to vin in May.
He plans to go door-to-door to get people out
to the polling places. Additionally, Badilla has put
a lot of energy into getting people to use absentee
ballots. He said a lot of people are busy, either
working or going to school, and he wants to make
sure they know they can still vote with an absentee
ballot.
Diaz said he does not plan to do any special
campaigning for the general election.
"I'm just going to continue to be available to
the community," he said.,
To Diaz, the issues surrounding the election
are the issues that are always present in South
Thcson, particularly housing, crime and develop-ment.
"We have been working on these issues, but
more needs to be done," Diaz said.
Badilla thinks the first step has to start with the

"What I want to do is get the community hack
together, including businesses," Badilla said.
Badilla grew up in South Thcson, and returned
to South Thcson three years ago, after having lived
in Thcson for a while. He said when he returned
to the neighborhood, he only knew a few people.
He wants to remedy that situation.
"We need to focus more on what the council
needs to do to improve the community," Badila
said.

grave. Desde el enero, los policías hicieron 45
dentenciones de felonías y 267 dentenciones de
delitos menos graves, Brewer dijo.
