New patrol cars cruising the streets
By Lisa Winfield
Sorne South Tucson
police officers are zooming
in new hot wheels these
days.
For the first time in five
years, the South Tucson Po-lice
Department purchased
new police cars for its patrol
officers.
Officers say the new
cars were needed.
Driving 35 to 45 miles
each 10-hour shift requires
the use of a dependable
car, Officer John Gonzales
said.
"That way we can op-erate
on the streets without
breaking down," Gonzales
said.
Two 1995 Chevrolet
Caprices arrived April 1 2 at
a cost of $17,995 each, Po-lice
Chief Gerald Brewer
said. Both cars will be out-fitted
with a light bar, siren
and interior cage.

sary police features to each
car at an additional cost of
about $300, he said.
The cars were pur-chased
through the use of
anti-racketeering, or RICO,
funds, Brewer said. RICO
funds are monies gained
through the sale of any as-sets
confiscated from crimi-nals
as a result of any crime
that makes money, he said.
Each patrolman will
get to drive one of the new
cars on a rotating basis,
Brewer said.
Police sergeants, who
traditionally receive priority
on any new vehicles, will
receive one oftwo other cars
that will be ordered soon.
"We'rejust waiting for
another RICO check to
come in before we order
them," Brewer said.
The new cars are out-fitted
with a "police pack-age,"
Brewer said, which
includes a heavy suspension
