Domestic
violence
shelter falls
victim to
vandalism
By JiU Stewart
It was supposed to have
opened already.
But now, "it's a terrible mess,"
said Residential Director Karen
Thompson.
A new women's shelter, orga-nized
by the Brewster Center and
designed to cater to Latinas, was
originally scheduled to open Nov.
I until vandalism occurred in
early October.
The damage is so extensive
that "you could walk through the
walls," Thompson said. "These
are not small patches. More than
half of the walls need to be re-placed,
glass windows were shat-tered,
camodes were demolished,
and they wrote on the walls."
The police have made no ar-rests,
bat the Brewster Center has
received many calls and dona-tions
from the community, Th-ompson
said.
Besides cash donations, mens-hers
of the community have of-fered
to provide services free of
charge and w&re waiting to hear
ft'cim our insurance company, Th-ompson
said.
Leslie Wheeler-Dobbs, execu-tive
director of the Brewster Cen-ter,
spent three years trying to find
funding for this new shelter.
Dobbs said in addition to pro-viding
more resources for domes-tic
violence victims, there is a
need to provide services that are
more culturally sensitive,
And after talking with city and
county officials as well as gath-ering
support from the commu-nity
and hoard of directors at the
Brewster Center, Dobbs made "a
dream of members in the Latino
community a reality," said Myrna
Ruiz, program coordinator of the
new women's shelter.
"This shelter is a big step,"
said Ruiz, who has worked at the
Brewster Center's Pima Shelter
for eight tnonths where 33 percent
of the adult clients are Latinos.
"it is a big issue for as. Latinos
have less resources money wise
so they're less likely to go to a
doctor, to access the legal system,
and to assert their rights as human
beings," Ruiz said. "It's difticult
for English-speaking women too,
bat for Latinos it's compounded
by language and cultural bar-riers.''
Ruiz said a lot of women who
come to the shelter are undocu-mented
and in the process of gain-ing
legal status. This is often the
problem women have escaping an
abusive situation because the
hatterer will threaten to have her
deported if she tries to leave and
