South Tucson will get at
least one of the items on its
Christmas wish list - a new
police chief.
After five months of placing
ads in newspapers and
interviewing 23 candidates, the
South Tucson City Council
hired a former Edgewood, FIa.,
police chief to fill the position
once held by Richard Vidaurri.
The $40,000-a-year position
includes a take-home vehicle.

Family givers
needs an angel
By Lee Potter
The Fernandez family gives
to charity throughout the year.
But this Christmas, they could
use a little help.
Like many people living
from paycheck to paycheck,
the Fernandezes find it
difficult to make ends meet
during the holidays.
The three Fernandez
families, whose names have
been changed to protect their
privacy, live together so they
can help one another through
difficult times.
"We like to cherish all we
have," said Carmen, one of
three sisters in the three-family
household.
Despite their hardships, the
family finds time to volunteer
for charitable agencies.
Carmen, her mother and her
Sisters volunteer at soup
kitchens and homeless shelters
two or three times a week.
Their husbands struggle to
keep their families fed and off
welfare.
Like most parents, Carmen
and her sisters would like their
five children to wake up
Christmas morning to the
sight of wrapped presents and
over-stuffed stockings.
But their Christmas will
probably be as bare as the stark
white walls of their tiny three
bedroom triplex.
Mnney is not as important
as staying together as a family,
Carmen said.
But a few gifts under the tree
would be nice, too, she said.
The family will contribute
what they have - themselves
- by helping serve food to
South Tucson's homeless
people on Christmas Day.
Still, like most children, the
Fernandez kids dream of
Christmas presents. Christina,
2, wants a doll house. Carlos,
6, wants a helmet so he can ride
his bicycle. Jose,lO, wants a
Nintendo.
The list goes on, but the
Fernandez budget does not.
So they share everything
they have - their telephone,
clothing, winter jackets, even
shoes.
"Money (is unnecessary),"
Carmen explained. "We just
want enough to have my family
healthy."

The police department is

A fairly new department
to "mold his way" is a "golden
opportunity" for Brewer, Salaz

"The numbers are
adequate," Brewer said. But
eventually, he wants to
increase the number of officers
working for South Tucson.
Brewer said his concern was
for the "safety out there for the
officers," but added there was
"not a critical safety problem."
Brewer said he plans to take
his first step by "getting
acclimated with the agency and
the officers." He also will be
