After 29 years of work in city administration,
including the past loas city manager of South Tucson,
Rene Gastelum recently stepped down to pursue "other
opportunities."
"Six months ago I decided that I just wanted to get
through the holidays and make my decision publicly
after the first of the year," said Gastelum, who stepped
down March 31.
Gastelum's colleague Fernando Castro, former
South Tucson finance director, officially took over his
spot April 3.
South Tucson Mayor Shirley Villegas and the city
council voted unanimously (7-0) to select Castro as the
new city manager at the February ceuncil meting.
Castro, who began as city finance director in
October 1997, thinks the new title will bring many
challenges as well as rewards.
"I am very eager to continue the projects that Rene
(Gastelum) and Mayor Villegas have already started,"
Castro said. "And I am excited because I think it will
be a great opportunity forme to grow also."
Castro cites plans for a new shopping center at the
comer of 40th Street and 6th Avenue, on the site of the
former Pima County Hospital, as one of Gastelum's
greatest accomplishments.
"Rene (Gastelum), along with Mayor Villegas,
deseo-es a lot of credit for the fact that the project is
now underway," Castro said.
The project, which includes a new Basha's grocery
store, should be completed by late December.
"It is and will be a veo big deal for our city, if not
the biggest project in our city's history," Castro said.
"That project seemed tobe on the back burner for a

proposition yet. Its supporters must gather
